Chapter Twenty-Three

Josh was slow to get out of bed the next morning. Shaw was next to him sleeping soundly and memories of last night filled his mind. He could wake up to her every day and never tire of it. But today he had to focus on the barn. James was getting more ballsy, and he was concerned for Shaw’s and his safety.

Once out of the bedroom, he called Aaron.

“Harvey’s Sub Shop!” Aaron answered.

He chuckled. “Now I’m hungry.”

“My job is done.”

“Hey, I wanted to find out if you learned anything more.”

“No, the last report that came in from my guy said he followed James to your place, which you already know about. He parked up the street. When James left, he followed a distance behind. James dropped someone off just outside Woodinville and then he drove back to the house he’s staying at. There were no other stops.”

“Well, that’s good I guess.”

“I discovered who owns the house where he’s been staying. The owner is Brian Springton.”

He let that thought roll around for a moment. “Makes sense, they both have something to gain. Did you happen to run a check on Springton?”

“I did. He’s clean.”

He walked over to the window and stared out.

“I’ll have my guy stay with James as long as you need. It’s the least I can do for you.”

“Thank you. Call me if you learn anything new.” He ended the call.

It was still early, and he wanted to let Shaw sleep in since it was the weekend. But he couldn’t sit around doing nothing. Instead, he got to work making pancakes and frying bacon, moving quietly and enjoying the fact he had someone to cook for. After he left that summer, he tried a relationship once but that didn’t last the week. His heart was with Shaw, it always would be.

If James knew how Josh felt about her, he’d try to get to him that way. The thought turned him cold. He had to stop James.

Shaw walked into the kitchen wearing only his t-shirt.

“Good morning.”

He stopped mid pancake flip to admire her bare legs. “Hi.”

“Eyes up here, sailor.”

He glanced up to see her grinning. After finishing the pancake flip, he pulled her in for a kiss.

“Hard to keep from staring at those legs of yours, Sweetheart.”

He winked and then went back to cooking breakfast.

“How long do you think before the will can be finalized? Assuming we win this dispute?” he asked.

“The hearing is set for Friday. If the judge decides James doesn’t have a valid claim, then it will be finalized the same day.”

He nodded, silently hoping for that outcome. “And if the judge thinks James has a claim?”

“Well, a few things could happen. It could go on another few weeks, possibly months.”

He let out a sigh.

She eyed him closely. “What aren’t you telling me?”

Bacon sizzling filled the silence as he debated how much to tell her. With a quick flip of his wrist, he turned the stove off and turned to face her. She wasn’t someone he could hide things from.
